TRANSLATION

Existence

In this sparkling city there’s a sadness that can’t quite be hidden: it’s there, staring back at us.
We end up losing track of our own existence, a little crushed, in need of protection.
Each one of us, as long as we exist, can’t help but be aware of this.
And yet my words of love end up losing any meaning.
I chase after unrealized dreams trying to sooth my heart, but will I ever see them become reality?
In this battle for life, dreams get sidetracked.

We’ve got to react (and come to grips with reality)*, even in the shadows of this dizzying city.
Once more, we need to stand up with love and sincerity.
We’ve got to react, even if our own individuality knocks us down.
I want to love all of the things that I see, accept them as they are.

Though many times, things as they appeared to me disappointed my expectations,
I should have known the difference between reality and dreams.
And even if I try to accept everything as it is,
there’s a difference between accepting you as my destiny, and carrying the burden of someone else’s life.
Which color should I spread (over the emptiness), before I end up denying my own love?
I don’t mind if you laugh, but when you’re troubled
with love and dreams, I want you to remember this:

We’ve got to react, even in the shadows of this dizzying city.
Once more, we need to stand up with love and sincerity.
I’ve got to acknowledge your eyes that speak the truth.
I want to love even those gentle lies told on a whim to hurt no one.

Does love represent the truth? Will love save you?
Even if we’re knocked down by enmity and betrayals
it’s all right: we still love. What else can we do?

We’ve got to react, even in the shadows of this dizzying city.
Once more, we need to stand up with love and sincerity.
We’ve got to react, even if our own individuality knocks us down.
I want to love all of the things that I see, accept them as they are.

*NOTE: the original verb used in the refrain, “uketomeru” can be translated as “to catch; to stop the blow”, “react to”, “to accept, to come to grips with (reality)”.
